We have an established history of innovation in blood transfusion therapies and scientific advancements, and are most satisfied when these advances are put into practice for the ultimate goal - to help those in need to survive, and thrive, after a life-altering medical condition or emergency. Here are just a few examples:
Human Leukocyte Antigen Typing

Human Leukocyte Antigen Typing
More and more people are alive today because of advances in complex tissue typing. Human Leukocyte Antigen Typing, or HLA typing, is essential for organ transplants, marrow transplants and others needing HLA-matched blood components. BloodSource’s HLA laboratory is one of the most highly acclaimed in the world.
Reference Laboratory
BloodSource’s Reference Laboratory is one of only about 50 accredited in the United States to handle complex blood compatibility testing for patients. This hospital support department finds donors for patients with rare and unusual sensitivities to factors on red blood cells and platelets. The AABB-accredited immunohematology laboratory maintains a file of rare blood donors who are called upon to help patients in our area and across the nation.
National Marrow Donor Program
BloodSource and other centers nationwide provided the basis for the foundation of the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), which conducts nationwide searches to pinpoint suitable matches for patients needing marrow transplants. Now, more than 55,000 area residents are listed on the NMDP registry.
BloodSource Center for Blood Research
One of only a few blood center-based research departments, BloodSource Center for Blood Research is composed of dedicated doctors, scientists and specialists who work to enhance the safety of the blood supply throughout the world.
We are frequently designated as a trial site for new tests, which are then implemented throughout blood centers across the United States, upon FDA or appropriate agency approval. Many tests are standard procedure at BloodSource long before they are adopted by other facilities.
Progenitor Cell Collection
Cancer patients often must undergo aggressive chemotherapy and radiation to effectively treat their diseases. These treatments often destroy the patients’ bone marrow and immune systems that must be replaced or repaired to avoid death. BloodSource is one of a handful of centers in California where the patients’ progenitor (stem) cells from their blood are collected, processed and stored in advance of treatment and then prepare it for use, in place of bone marrow for transplantation.
